Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) sugar
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 3/4 cups (675 mL) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt
  • About 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) assorted coloured sugars or candy decorations

    Heat oven to 400ºF. In large bowl, stir sugar, butter, shortening and eggs with spoon until mixed. Stir in flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.

    Shape dough by rounded teaspoonfuls into balls. Roll balls in coloured sugar until coated. On ungreased cookie sheet, place balls about 2 inches apart

    Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until centres are almost set. Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.
