Chocolate Snowballs

Try this chocolaty twist on traditional Russian tea cakes. Your guests will be in for a delightful surprise when they realize there's chocolate in the center of each cookie.


1 pouch (496 g) Betty Crocker* Sugar Cookie Mix
1/2 cup (125 mL) butter or margarine, melted
1 egg
1/4 cup (50 mL) all-purpose flour
1/4 cup (50 mL) cocoa powder
1/2 cup (125 mL) finely chopped almonds
1 tsp (5 mL) almond extract
60 milk chocolate kisses
3/4 cup (175 mL) icing sugar


  • Heat oven to 375°F (190°C ) for shiny baking sheet or 350°F (180°C) for dark or non-stick baking sheet. In large bowl, stir cookie mix, melted butter, egg, flour, cocoa, almonds and extract until soft dough forms.
  • Shape dough into sixty 3/4-inch (2 cm) balls; wrap each around 1 chocolate. Place 2-inches (5 cm) apart on ungreased baking sheet.
  • Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until set. Immediately remove from baking sheet. Cool slightly about 5 minutes.
  • Roll cookies in icing sugar. Cool completely, about 30 minutes.
  • Re-roll cookies in icing sugar. Store tightly covered.

Tip: For a lovely presentation, stack snowballs in a pyramid on a large mirrored platter and place in the center of your holiday dessert table.
